Our speaker for our 2nd Regular Meeting is CP Danny Abinoja who is the District Chair for Disaster Management. District 3830 with the efforts of CP Danny's team created a Disaster Management manual to be disseminated to all the clubs in the district. Other district also showed interest in adopting the disaster management manual. The focus of the Disaster Management Manual is to train people in Disaster Preparedness with focus on the five areas namely: earthquake, fire, volcanic eruption, landslide and flood. We inducted a new member to the club in the person of Chit Tan. Our member based is now at 43.

Last July 2, 2010, Rotarians flocked to Le Pavillion at Roxas Boulevard to witness the official HANDOVER of District 3830 from Gov. Sid Garcia to our Global Governor Ed Alvarez. There were 700+ people who attended the event. Since we discourage on site registration, everybody experienced a smooth and fun filled Handover.The Handover 2010 was a huge success. The host clubs for this event are RC Makati San Lorenzo and RC Makati West.

Club Handover 2010

Pres. Jing passed on the baton of leadership to PE Ruth Nocum during our club handover. Certificate of recognitions were given to members of the club who have supported Pres. Jing during her term. The club handover also coincides with the birthday of Pres. Jing so its a double celebration. We really had a fun filled night and we are looking forward to the incoming term of PE Ruth.

Calawis Visit with GSE Team from New Jersey, USA

90 Years of Philippine Rotary Celebration

District 3830 celebrated the 90 years of Philippine Rotary at Mall of Asia. RCMSL is the lead club for this event. The event was well attended by Present and Past District Governors coming from the 10 Philippine District. The event was attended also by Rotary Peace Awardees. The event was also the launching of the partnership of District 3830 and Kapit Bisig sa Ilog Pasig wherein the district donated 900,000 pesos for 12 houses. The highlight of the event is the beaming of the End Polio Logo at the Globe LED of Mall of Asia. This event is the biggest PR projects so far in promoting Rotary to the community.

Rotarians converged to Makati Sports for the On to Montreal Launch. Everybody came with their most authentic "frenchy" attire. 4 in 1 Literacy Project

RCMSL with RC Metro East Taytay and RC Paco Manila had a 4 in 1 literacy project for Grade 5 and Grade 6 students of Muzon Elementary School. We had a film showing about rabies, its causes, prevention and cure. The video is courtesy of National Rabies Center of San Lazaro Hospital. We also did a presentation on the causes of dengue and how to prevent it. Since its been in the news that most people who were victims of the flood are getting leptospirosis, we also gave some inputs to the children about the causes of leptospirosis, its symptoms and what are the possible remedies. The last presentation was about proper oral hygiene. The seminar ended with us distributing toothbrushes and toothpaste to the students. About 250 students attended the 4 in 1 Literacy Project.

Vitamin A Drops to Grade 1 Students

RCMSL in partnership with RC Metro East Taytay conducted a Vitamin A drops campaign to Grade 1 students of Muzon Elementary School. There were 300 students who received Vitamin A drops. Vitamin A deficiency causes blindness to children. This project will supplement the vitamin A requirements of children to avoid any cases of lost of eyesight in the future.

Book Donation to Taytay Elementary School Central

The last school we went to for the book donation is Taytay Elementary School Central. This is also where we distributed relief goods to 300 students who were severely affected by the flood. We were welcomed by Principal Lourdez Gerardo and Librarian Durna Guevarra. The schools has 2256 students and 51 teachers. All the schools we went to offered snacks and the last school prepared lunch for us.

San Isidro Elementary school is the most affected school that we went to. As per Principal Juanita Z. Umali, the estimate of books damaged by the flood is around 700,000 pesos. You will see in the pictures that there are books hanged on the fence to dry them up. Mr. Archie Dela Rosa, the librarian, appreciated the donation of books since they are reconstructing their library. San Isidro Elementary schools has 2,309 students with 52 teachers.

After the various relief operations, the club decided to also donate books to schools who are affected by the flooding. The first school we went to is Bagong Pag-Asa Elementary School. Baby Rotarian Shelly and Spouse Jet had their own share of helping our countrymen who were victims of Typhoon Ondoy. They organized their staff to prepare food and distribute relief goods to 370 families in Barangay Sta. Cruz Antipolo. They also had a soup kitchen there. The food was over flowing that is why they decided to go to Barangay San Roque Marikina and Barangay Balanti in Cainta to feed more people. A new Rotarian who lived up to the motto Service Above Self. We need more Rotarians like Shelly!

MAPSA Awards '09

In line with the Vocational Service Month, RCMSL had its annual MAPSA Awards in Polo Club. This is already RCMSL's 13th year to recognize Outstanding MAPSA officers who exemplifies excellence in their vocation. This year's awardees are: T/O Aquilino Vilchez Jr., T/O Arthur Tabaquero, T/O Genilen Davis. T/O Genilen Davis was not able to receive her award since she died of cancer few days before the awarding. The awardees received a plaque and some monetary reward.

Relief Operation in Calawis, Antipolo

RCMSL and family members distributed relief goods to Calawis, Antipolo. We had to make a detour of 20 minutes because the bridge leading to Calawis was down.The roads were bad but we got there safely. Along the way there were so many landslides that it caused part of the road to erode. But everything was worth it all after seeing the happy faces of the Dumagats, Lemontados and the other residents of Calawis. Thanks to Rafa Garcia, Mara Villavicencio, Rissa Cortes and Cotton Villavicencio who came with RCMSL members PP Chacha Camacho, Marie O'Connor, Eugene Gonzales and myself. Calawis Antipolo is our adopted community and this is the site where our 3H grant will be implemented.

Joint Relief Operations at Lupang Arenda, Taytay Rizal

Last October 2, RCMSL join forces with RC Taytay Metro East for a joint relief operation at Lupang Arenda, Taytay Rizal. Lupang Arenda is a settlement near the Laguna Lake. Rotarians braved the knee deep water just to reach out to more than 500 families. We distributed food, water and old clothes to the beneficiaries. The water is not expected to go down until about 3 months. Kudos to Pres. Jing and Pres. Eric!

Distribution of Food to the Victims of Typhoon Ondoy at Riverbanks, Marikina

PP Maridel Villavicencio and family went to the Marikina river banks to distribute relief goods for the stricken families caused by typhoon Ondoy on September 28, Monday. They were able to feed more than 500 people who have not eaten yet. It was pitch dark during the distribution of foods and only the car lights illuminated the place.

Bayan Ni Juan in Calauan Laguna

In support of the project of Gina Lopez, Kapit Bisig sa Ilog Pasig, seven club members accompanied by four other family and friends traveled to Calauan Laguna to visit the Bayan ni Juan relocation site. We participated in the interaction with settlers from Pasig River, viewed handicrafts done by out of school youths, vermi-culture project and viewed all other structures. Pres. The program was designed to train people of all ages on the skills of hair grooming, coloring, foot spa, nail polishing and massage. Business aspects were discussed for attendees to establish their business careers along hair grooming. RCMSL was one of the lead clubs. The program started on Sep 14 and will last till Sep 19.

Literacy Summit

Literacy Summit has the goal of increasing literacy amongst the marginalized poor children through Rotary. The summit showcased all the projects of each club. Pres. Jing Sarao introduced PDG Jimmy Cura, one of the 3 guest speakers for the summit. Part of the Literacy project is RCMSL’s adoption of Sibol School in Taguig and Tulong Aral sa Tuloy sa Don Bosco with Fr. Rocky.

Gina Lopez of ABS-CBN Foundation shared her vision of how best to clean the Pasig River. RCM San Lorenzo, RCM East and RCM Forbes led 10 other clubs in raising the level of awareness of the District on the worthwhile project of cleaning the Pasig River. After the presentation, our club donated a total of P50,000, other Rotarians, led by our members, submitted pledges to support the funds needed for the project.

On the fourth day, the group headed to Calawis, Antipolo to visit our 3H Grant project. We were welcomed by the warm folks of Antipolo. We met the Governor, Jun Ynares, the Mayor, Danilo Leyble and some important people. Our group was headed by DG Sid Garcia, IPDG Boyet Limon and DCC Mon Veluz who inducted our RCC. Lunch was hosted by PP Mari Lacson, Jing Sarao and Shelly Lazaro at Sonia Roco’s farm in Antipolo. Dinner was hosted by IPP Chacha and Randy Perez at the residence of Chacha.

We all prayed for the healing grace of the Lord to shower upon those in need especially Adolf Palacio, Philip Ocampo, husband of Charter Member Grace Ocampo; and Ricky Lao, husband of PP Beth Lao. The brother of Adolf, Victor flew in from the USA to be with us as well.

Lunch was held in Via Mare, Oyster Bar after the mass. Indeed, I felt our spirit of love, friendship and unity that bound us together after all these years.

1ST RCMSL Meeting with PDG Jimmy Cura

As we launched the new Rotary year, the first meeting was well attended with PDG Jimmy Cura having served as our fountain of wisdom. The food was excellent, the venue at the McKinley Room of the Polo Club was most appropriate for the occasion, but most importantly was the spirit of support I felt as I started my term.

Dir. Odette Ong arranged the venue and the excellent menu, together with PP Marilou Romero who made an inspiring introduction of our guest speaker. PP Cynthia Reyes moderated competently and the invocation by PP Maridel Villavicencio touched us all. All these members truly made my first meet a memorable one.
